Some of the specialty plants, trees & shrubs still growing at Honeywood are:

  • A stand of Douglas Fir
  • A stand of Siberian Larch
  • Numerous plantings of Bur Oak
  • Numerous varieties of Juniper
  • 6 Varieties of Caragana
  • 4 Large (40 ft) Linden trees
  • 6 Varieties & colors of Chokecherries
  • The species Lily L. dauricum growing wild
  • The species Lily L. pumilum growing wild
  • An assortment of Martagon lilies growing in the bush
  • The rare L. martagon Album growing in the bush
  • A row each of Finnish Spruce and Finnish Juniper
  • Sandcherries such as The Western Sandcherry, Mongolian cherry and Bert Porter’s own selections are growing in a number of places
  • Several varieties of Honeysuckle are growing all over the nursery including a rare Dwarf Bouquet Honeysuckle
  • Both tame and wild High Bush cranberries are abundant as are numerous varieties of Saskatoon, Pincherry and Hazelnut
  • Unique Pinion Pines planted from seed brought back from Siberia can be seen at the edge of the lawn
  • Fields containing lilies, peonies, rhubarb & daylilies
  • A number of varieties of currants including: Willoughby Black, Honeywood Red, Missouri Black, and a white variety name unknown
  • The original Thunderchild Crab hybridized by Percy Wright
  • The original Honeywood Saskatoon discovered by Bert Porter and introduced by Lakeshore Nurseries
  • The original Spring Snow flowering Crab hybridized by Bert Porter and introduced by Inter – State Nurseries of Hamburg, Iowa
  • Numerous varieties of apples including Bert Porters RedHeart Crab and some varieties that are almost extinct like Hyer’s # 14
  • Numerous plantings of the Kerr Hazelnut hybridized by Les Kerr
  • Numerous varieties of plums – Bert Porter experimented with plums right from the early 40’s introducing 4 of his own – Parkside Plum, Mistawasis, E.S. Number One and a little one called Green Elf (some of these are undoubtedly still on the nursery but need to be identified)
  • Numerous plantings and varieties of: Mountain Ash, Birch, Maple, Poplar, Lilac, Evergreens and Willows
